Harbour Sunsets

Autumn Colours

I have been into taking photographs for many years, as an extention of my interests in
art and in its own right. It took off particularly during my time at college, the work for
my degree show in 1979 being photographs of work done in the environment, taken
on slide film and printed using Cibachrome paper.

After leaving college my interest in photography dominated, taking, developing and
printing my own black and white photographs.

Things have now moved on with the advent of powerful home computers and digital
cameras though all of the images in these galleries are from the film negatives
scanned at time of their processing and put on floppy or compact disks.

NONE of the photos in autumn colours and Harbour Sunsets have been
enhanced at all electronically, but are as taken, with colour in mind.

The sunsets are nearly all taken from the same spot looking across from Emsworth
shore towards Hayling Island, with the tower blocks of Portsmouth behind, and the
Downs of the Isle of Wight beyond that just visible in some.

These were taken before the Spinnaker Tower was constructed which now forms part
of the Portsmouth horizon as seen from the harbour end of Beach Road.

Most of these are taken with old second hand135mm and 500mm telescopic lenses. As
the images were more to do with colour and atmosphere than sharpness, the lens quality
is of less importance than intent and timing. They are all winter sunsets which are at their
best in January.

The quality however, as with all the images on these pages, has had to be compromised
to allow for quicker download times.
